These are usually lit by a reflector and soft box to get that soft lighting.
Here you see marilyn monroe looking glamourous as ever!
Side lighting
This photo set up would simply be a light source lighting a subject from the side and getting a cool side lit affect.
I like this guys hair in the photo.
